Manager Description of Competence:
- Puts a plan together taking into account of potential setbacks and the possibility of change
Some suggestions to develop this competency are:
Do it yourself
- Ask your staff if you are spending the right amount of time with them to enable them to be effective
- The next difficult project you have, produce 2 or 3 plans, each of which takes into account a different, but highly possible contingency, so you can easily switch from one plan to the next
- Hold a department review to evaluate activity versus achievement of key goals
Do it with someone else
- With someone whose planning skills you value, develop a plan for effectively apportioning your time between your own tasks and management and support of your people
- With an experienced person, review one of your plans and list everything that might happen to prevent it being achieved. Make contingency pans for items on the list
Do something else
- Keep a diary or log of all you do for a week. Analyse how much time you are allocating to key areas.
- When planning a major project/task attend a session with others who have planned for similar events, to see what problems they encountered and how they dealt with it
- Work shadow a skilled planner/organiser and note the effective things he/she does
- Review the Learning 4 Business Time Management e-learning courses or the Video Arts DVD's on planning.
